Aterciopelados is one of the first latin rock bands in Colombia. Aterciopelados is also among the Latin American country's top groups. They are the recipients of Grammy award nominations in 1997 and 1998. Aterciopelados has fused its own sound by combining a rock-solid approach with a variety of Latin American musical traditions including mariachi, bolero, tropical and flamenco. The last two studio albums, Caribe Atomico and Gozo Poderoso have a definite hip hop feel to them, whereas earlier albums were influenced more by hard rock and punk.
Los Aterciopelados, whose name translates as "the Velvety Ones," was formed by former members of Delia Y Los Aminoácidos -- Andrea Echeverri, who plays acoustic guitar and sings lead, and Héctor Buitrago, who plays bass guitar. The original drummer Andrés Giraldo was replaced by Alejandro Duque in 1995 and the original guitar player Charlie Márquez was replaced by Alejandro Gómez Cáceres in 1997. Also, lead singer Andrea Echeverri was chosen by Gustavo Cerati to sing " En la Ciudad de la Furia" for Soda Stereo's MTV unplugged album.
Echeverri came out with a self-titled solo album in 2004.
"Hector Buitrago released a solo work, "CONECTOR" in the sring of 2006 featuring vocals by Andrea Echeverri, Julieta Venegas and other invided artist.

With the critical and commercial success of their previous Grammy-nominated album "Gozo Poderoso," Aterciopelados landed on the Top 10 of the Billboard Top Latin Albums and appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
The multiple Grammy-nominated Colombian pop/alternative act returns with their first new studio album in five years, 'OYE', due in stores October 24th.
Aterciopelados co-founders Andrea Echeverri and Hector Buitrago both released attention-grabbing solo albums (Echeverri's received two Grammy nominations) in the past year, further building anticipation for the bands new studio set. The new disc is produced by Hector Buitrago and mixed by Thom Russo (Johnny Cash, Juanes, Kinky). In support of the new album, Aterciopelados will kick off a major headlining U.S. tour in late October and will return to the States for additional dates in 2007.
Hola!
Musical mavericks often reject the past; this Colombian electro-rock duo is dragging its traditions into the present, marinating its songs in South American rhythms. -TIME MAGAZINE
Aterciopelados ("Velvety Ones") are one of the most important and most likable bands in current Latin rock. The group is led by the songwriters Andrea Echeverri, the lead singer, and Hector Buitrago, the bassist. They annex and combine styles with a merry disregard for boundaries: new wave, lounge music, reggae, bossa nova, electro, hard rock, bolero, Mexican banda, house, rumba-rock and straightforward pop anthems, not to mention surf-rock lead-guitar lines. -NEW YORK TIMES
